The Golden Compass was invented in 1893 by the doctor and painter Adalbert Goeringer and is an ingenious, practical tool for identifying the Golden Ratio in art and nature and incorporating it into craft or graphic work. This is made possible by the middle arm: it always divides the distance between the two outer arms according to the Golden Ratio.
Pure harmony
The ‘Golden Ratio’ refers to a specific ratio of division of a line segment (or an area, an angle, etc) that is perceived by humans as particularly harmonious. To achieve this, a line segment is divided into the sub-segments a and b in such a way that the ratio of the larger segment a to the smaller segment b is the same as the ratio of the total length a + b to the larger segment a.

This ratio has been known since ancient Greece and is found not only in numerous works of art and architectural structures, but also in the proportions of the human body and in many plants.
