Almost as old as mankind
Ocarinas are among the oldest musical instruments known to mankind. For over 10,000 years they have been played in various forms all over the world and in almost all cultures, in South America as well as in Europe or China.
Instrument for beginners
Ocarinas are so-called vessel flutes because they are closed at the bottom and not open like other flutes. The sound is produced by blowing across a hole, which causes the enclosed air to vibrate. Small additional holes for the fingers change the pitch. In the case of ocarinas in the narrower sense, the air flow is directed through a mouthpiece with a wind channel over the sound hole, which is why they are also called beak flutes. Ocarinas are usually made of clay, but can also be made of empty pumpkins, nuts or the like. The original ocarina is probably the round whistling instrument formed by the two hollow palms blowing through the small hole formed between the thumbs pressed together.
Cardboard? No Problem!
Ceramic ocarinas enchant the listener with their soft, flattering tones. Here comes the proof that an instrument made of cardboard also has this wonderfully velvety sound. Our soprano ocarina is tuned in C major, has a range of nine notes and is child's play - even for adults. The cardboard is coated with food-safe dispersion varnish. Due to its compact size, it can be worn around the neck on a cord.
