The Royal Cubit has been an integral part of ancient Egyptian civilisation since its beginnings some 5,000 years ago and is therefore one of the very first standards of measurement. Its divisions or multiples can be found in almost every ancient Egyptian building or work of art. Artistically decorated cubit rods, some overlaid with gold leaf, were presented as gifts to temples or placed in the tombs of important deceased figures, such as Tutankhamen, whose burial hoard included no fewer than six wooden cubits.
Educational and interactive exhibit
This carefully reconstructed, true-to-scale cardboard replica offers history you can touch: The hieroglyphs denoting the subdivisions (finger, hand’s breadth, fist, span, upper arm, etc.) are intuitively legible even to the untrained eye, and a centimeter scale on the underside allows for interesting comparisons of measurements. The accompanying four-page information leaflet provides an introduction to the historical background and contains a careful translation of the hieroglyphic texts.

Things you need for assembly:
- a sturdy, flat work surface. A cutting mat, for example, is useful
- a ruler
- a pair of scissors
- a craft knife or scalpel
- a blunt knife or a bone folder
- a good all-purpose glue
