Discovering colour spectra – with 1,000 lines per millimetre

The high line density of this grating produces a particularly broad light spectrum. The resulting image is similar to that produced by a prism, except that in the case of a prism we speak of light refraction, whereas with a grating we speak of light diffraction. Every type of light produces its own characteristic spectrum when viewed or projected through the film containing the grating. This enables important conclusions to be drawn about the nature of the light source.

Contents:

  • 1 sheet of PET diffraction grating film, 38 x 152 mm, thickness 0.05 mm, transparent
  • 1 printed sheet made of construction card, DIN A4, to be cut out
  • Assembly instructions, explanations and experiment guide printed on the card sheet (in German)

Properties: Grating constant 0.001 mm/µm (1,000 lines per mm)

Assembly time: approx. 30 minutes

Producer: AstroMedia GmbH, Im Wirrigen 30, 45731 Waltrop, Germany, astromedia.de

Instructions:

Cut the film into 4 equal pieces and cut out the front and back sections of the slide frames. Secure one piece of film behind each front section using some adhesive tape. Check that it is positioned correctly and, if necessary, rotate it: the spectrum must appear to the left and right of the frame, not at the top and bottom. Stick the frame halves together with glue. Done!

Important: Always hold the film by the edges only; fingerprints can affect performance.

Things you’ll need for assembly, or which might be useful:

  • a sturdy, flat work surface; a cutting mat is useful
  • a pair of scissors, a craft knife or a scalpel
  • a good all-purpose glue
  • some adhesive tape

Adult supervision:
Children under the age of 14 should use the film under adult supervision to avoid risks arising from improper handling.

Danger from sunlight:
Never look directly into the Sun, as this can cause serious eye damage.

Risk of injury:
Take particular care when handling pointed and sharp objects! Use sharp tools with care and, where necessary, take appropriate safety measures to prevent injury.

Fire hazard:
Keep away from open flames and sources of heat. The product contains highly flammable materials.

Use of adhesives:
When using adhesives, follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Work in well-ventilated areas and avoid contact with skin or eyes.

Intended use:
The film should be used in accordance with the enclosed instructions. Unauthorised modifications may compromise functionality and safety.
